Heartburn and Acid Reflux
Almost half of all adults in the U.S. report having some symptoms of gastro-esophageal reflux. These symptoms include heartburn (a burning sensation in the upper abdomen or chest), belching, a sour or bitter taste, hoarseness, coughing, and difficulty swallowing. 25 million Americans suffer from burning pains and pressing sensations in the chest, typically after heavy meals.
Heartburn has nothing to do with one's heart, but rather the tube that connects the esophagus to the stomach. Normally, the valve - Lower Esophageal Sphincter (LES), prevents the reflux of gastric acid into the esophagus. It keeps the contents in the stomach, even in situations of increased pressure. The LES is so powerful that even if you stand on your head, the sphincter holds back the acid contents in the stomach and protects the esophagus. LES normally relaxes only to allow food to pass. The valve can be weakened or relaxes at inappropriate times, causing acidic stomach contents to backup into the esophagus. Heartburn is an inflammation and irritation of the sensitive lining of the esophagus. The more irritation, the weaker the LES becomes and vice versa.
There are four necessary components to healing gastro-esophageal reflux:
1. Strengthen the LES.
2. Normalize stomach acidity levels.
3. Decrease inflammation of the esophagus.
4. Normalize upper gastrointestinal tract digestion function.
